Most of the issues surrounding barefoot running are social.   There's
not a lot of good science that says you have to wear running shoes to
run.   running shoes have really only been in effect since the 70s or
80s.    This book has done a lot to push the movement forward: 
http://borntorun.org/book.html   It's based on the fact that there are
indians who run ultra marathons through the mountains of Mexico in a
pair of flat leather sandals.
