Hmmm. Looks like I need to look a bit more deeply at Audicity's
functions. Typically I use the blank lead-in to do some noise reduction
but that becomes so time consuming (not to mention boring) that I may do
what you're doing and worry about noise reduction only if it's extreme.
I also bought one of those slide/negative scanners and have gone
through maybe five packs of negatives. More time consumption. I don't
think I'm going to tackle the old 8mm films we took when we lived in
Japan.

I use Audacity to do the recording (open source - Windows/Mac/Linux),
and I just record one side, pause (even if I forget and there is 30
minutes of nothing at the end <g>), flip the LP, record that side, and
then have Audacity search for silence to break up the tracks. Then you
name each track and do an "export multiple" and you get all of the
tracks of the album exported with track numbers, etc. That's
oversimplifying of course, but it works really well for me.

I got an ION turntable for digitizing my albums. That is time consuming
considering I have albums that go back at least 40 years. Then my
co-workers found out I've got the device and started bringing in their
old albums. Needless to say, someone ended up disappointed. I've also
worked out how to get my mini video tapes to disk. That's not as
difficult as dealing with each track of an album though.
