Actually, the OP (me) didn't blame GW. I'm fully aware it's an iPhone
(and iPad) issue, and have a bug report open with Apple on it. In fact,
I just updated the bug to include the iPad's newer 3.2 OS.
The problem is universal from the standpoint of my being able to
duplicate it using various email clients (even apple mail) against
gmail, mobileMe, and Groupwise backends. I've not been able to test
Exchange, but I suspect it will be the same.
That said, I was just curious if someone had found a work-around for it
with GroupWise.

almost all the posters are blaming the source email system, an amazing
level of presumption that the iPhone is perfect and the problem couldn't
possibly be down to its inability to handle something so simple as an
attached email

Well, Joe's kinda right here - this is an iPhone issue that cropped up
at about version 3.1 I think. It's not just GW that has the issue as far
as I know. All you have to do is google for "iphone mimi-attachment" and
you will see no end to wailing and gnashing of teeth.
