 "snapshots" should be thought of as just that, a "picture" at that point in time, of the state of the VM.

Best use IMHO is to "memorialize" the configuration of a  machine, just before upgrades, configuration changes or any application install.   May save your (insert favored anatomy part) in such as case.

It is entirely unsuited for "backup" of any dynamic system, such as a database, time stamped or not.
