You probably don't want to do independent disks.  Those disks aren't
included in snapshots, and snapshots are useful for many things such as
preparing for upgrades or even for regular backups.  Keep in mind I work
for Veeam, but regardless, there are various backup solutions which use
VMware snapshots.  That shouldn't be a concern for things such as GW or
eDir as there are ways to address these applications, such as shutting down
the POA before taking the snapshot and firing it back up as soon as the
snapshot is taken.  I actually wrote about this in a Cool Solutions article
a little ways back.
